Words cannot express her determination and fearlessness. Not once has she ever said “I can’t”. Her spirit is infectious and inspires all around her to want to push harder. If you ever think you can’t just take a moment to look and Katie and know that you can. Katie has reminded to look at the glass is half full. To approach everything with a smile, a laugh a big breathe and then…. Lets do this. Thank you Katie for teaching us how to live.
Us A Bit About Yourself My husband John & I have 3 kids. Maggie is 18 and going off to college in the Fall and Jack & Claire are 13 yr old twins. We moved to Milton in 2009 and in November 2012 I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer with metastasis to my liver. I have since endured years of chemotherapy, radiation and even a year of remission. Last February my cancer returned and six weeks ago I underwent a surgical procedure that sidelined me. I chose CorePhysique because the Dairy Queen is just down the street. Actually, CorePhysique chose me. I got to know the owner because I was dropping my son off for a baseball conditioning class. Upon noticing my ample muffin top, Kolleen Riddick, the owner of Core Physique, suggested I give one of her classes a try. But I immediately told her my cancer sob story and working out was not in the schedule. Six months later, in remission, I walked in with my son and saw Kolleen. First, I couldn’t believe she remembered my name. Second, she said: “What are you doing Tuesday?” I responded; “Nothing”. Because you see that’s what cancerous people do, they do nothing. There’s no energy, you’re lacking brain waves, and your muscles have atrophied. Then I heard; “Tuesday morning, come see me at 9:30.” HUH? “Oh no, no can do, this one who does nothing is very busy on Tuesday…” Kolleen said; “Ok, then come on Thursday at 9.” Like a deer caught in the headlights, I said “sure”. I thought of cancelling every day but… I have been coming to CorePhysique ever since.
What Did You Do Exercise-Wise Before CP? Exercise. Can you spell that? Can you use it in a sentence? Years ago, I loved Hot Yoga. It took me about a month to finally touch my toes but once I got the hang of it, it was the sweating and detoxing the chemo chemicals out of my system that was so gratifying. My favorite place closed so I stopped going, I stopped everything. Now, with yoga being offered at CP, I love going because I love the teachers and the students that gasp & grunt right next me.
What Is Your FAVORITE Exercise/Body Part to Work On? Wait, I’ve been working out body parts? That’s a difficult question. I have a tendency to get bored easily and every time I go, no kidding, Kolleen throws in a new move, she has a way of mixing it up and making every session seem new, like its the first time. My gut, I mean ‘Abs’, well at least I’m hoping one day for abs, even one ab, would be great. That area needs the greatest amount of work on me. As a warm up, Kolleen sends me walking around the entire building and while that might seem a little silly, don’t kid yourself, she walks with me. Have you ever walked with her? It’s a great way to start your work out and get your heart pumping.
What Is Your HATED Exercise/Body Part to Work On? When I first started at Core Physique, believe it or not, I couldn’t get down onto the floor. My muscles were so bad and my bones so fragile. Now, I still dread it but Kolleen taught me an easier way & it’s gotten so much better. Because CP is all about an individual approach to health & fitness, when I’m hurting, Kollen knows what to do. She is a Trigger Point Master, (one of only a few in this country!) and she knows how to roll or ‘trigger point’ the pain away. This is my LEAST favorite thing but, Dang it, it really works!
What Type of Music Gets Your Heart Rate Up? Junk Food Junky by Larry Groce The Candy Man by Sammy Davis Jr. Music is not my forte. I leave that up to the experts and they have not disappointed me yet 🙂
Do You Exercise On Your Non-CorePhysique Days? I don’t understand the question. One of the many reasons I go to Core Physique is because I can’t seem to exercise on my own. I’m just not motivated at home to get down on the floor and do sit ups – there’s way too much dog hair and all the chores that are screaming at me are deafening.
What Is Your Favorite Cheat Food(s)? You mean there are good foods? Cheese. Wine. Oh, but there’s Chocolate cake with Chocolate icing. Oh no, wait, there’s the salted caramel mocha at Starbucks. Did you know that butter goes with everything? One time when I was sick my friend brought me Martha Stewart’s Mac & Cheese, are you kidding me? I went into mourning when it was gone. But if I ever end up on death row, my last meal will include “saratoga chips”. I do not know the recipe in its entirety but they are giant home made potato chips with some kind of blue cheese/sour cream/bacon dip. Lord have mercy on me!
If You Had A “Me” Day (exercise not necessary), What Would It Look Like? What is a ‘me’ day? Remember those cheat day foods?… Honestly, I would walk my dog, sit by the pool for 20 min max to get a little vitamin D, I would meet a friend for lunch…. which would be a giant superfood salad with balsamic dressing (my favorite) OR have you tried the new lobster rolls at the Brine Shack? Oh my! (Perhaps that would go under the cheat food section.) I would make a fabulous dinner for my family because I love it when we all sit down together. And then… I would put my kids to bed two hours early.
Who Is Your Biggest Supporter? My husband, why wouldn’t he when the goal of an Ab is at stake… Actually, it is my husband, the work outs make me feel better and clear my head at the same time. Kolleen Riddick, Gail Connell, Pauline Mandato, they all know what I’ve been through and they all genuinely want to see each one of us thrive and frankly I wouldn’t enjoy it as much if they weren’t there to literally hold my hand through these work outs.
What Keeps You Coming Back To CorePhysique? The trainers. When I walk through the doors I keep expecting to hear the word “Norm!’ Core Physique is not a factory. You won’t find rows of bikes or treadmills, its a very individualized, unique place. The trainers take you and your well being very seriously. Because of that, it’s people like you and me, just trying to take the high road and get a monitored work out without injuring ourselves. And when I do walk in the door, not only do I see my friends from totally different areas of my social life: PTA, church, my neighborhood, etc… but I have met so many wonderful NEW people that I hope to see when I walk in the door… Gail, Pauline, Fran, Sara, Lucas, so many… (if you don’t have much of a social life, you will now 🙂
What Is The Best Thing That Has Changed About Your Life Since Committing To A Healthy Lifestyle? Who doesn’t love saying, real loud, in a crowded room… “My personal trainer says…” But on a more serious note, whether you have a cancer or a chronic disease, or maybe you’re fit as a fiddle, Core Physique is healing me. Every time I leave that gym I have an attitude of gratitude. I feel so lucky that I am able to go and that I’m taking the steps to better both my physical self and my mental self. When I do that, it fills me with hope. I am helping my self alongside the doctors & surgeons keeping me alive and keeping the cancer at bay. As James Brown says: “I Feel Good!”…
