Let me preface this entire article with some names I’ve been called recently; Unrealistic, Unreasonable, Extreme, Irrational, Too-Regimented, Bland, Boring, and Un-American. I get it, I am extreme when it comes to nutrition and I go above and beyond what most would do to maintain a specific bodyweight or to deem themselves as “healthy”. But, I also know that my obsession and fixation on nutrition is full of facts. Facts that I enjoy sharing with anyone and everyone that wants to listen and digest, so to speak.
Cheeseburgers, french fries, a glass of lemonade and a slice of apple pie. How American does that sound? To most, that sounds like the perfect American Friday night. But let’s look at this in two different points of time. First, 1950 America: Grass fed free roaming cattle with a slice of real cheddar cheese. Homegrown and pesticide free hand peeled potatoes. Lemon, sugar and water, Real apples in your delicious apple pie. Now a look at 2016 America: Grain fed caged cattle with a slice of cheese? Chemically sprayed, preservative laced, frozen potatoes cooked in vegetable oil. Lemon, 35 tsp of sugar and water. And your apple pie is frozen dough that doesn’t contain a single apple?
Eating like an American wasn’t supposed to be this way. We have drifted so far away from what we considered food in 1950 to what is being served to us in 2016. Our Parents (my grandparents), grew up eating essentially the same food we eat now, but they were NOT processed, doused in pesticides, genetically modified or polluted with tablespoons upon tablespoons of sugar.
The American diet in 2016 is alarming. Plain and simple. Sugar laced processed foods, simple carbohydrates, genetically modified crops, farm raised fish, grain fed beef, antibiotic treated dairy, and pesticide sprayed vegetables and fruits. When you sit down and think about the poison we are putting into our body day after day it is no surprise we have weight issues, back pain, trouble sleeping, ADHD, acne, colds, stomach bugs, headaches, etc.
So what do we do? Do we follow the Mediterranean diet? Eat like the Japanese? Drink detox teas? Paleo? Keto? Intermitting Fasting? What is the answer?
You eat like a human being. A human being eats animals, plants, nuts and vegetables. He doesn’t eat animal cookies, (pop)corn, peanut butter or veggie chips. A human being eats things that was or is alive. Fill your plate with organic, grass fed meat, eat organic steamed broccoli and enjoy non-genetically modified tomatoes. Grab handfuls of nuts, eat wild grains, enjoy real fresh fruit. Eat what the human race was designed to eat. Following fad diets, depraving yourself of real sources of food, poisoning yourself with packaged processed foods just isn’t sustainable. It isn’t complicated or a difficult practice to start. Stay away from the easy options, and veer towards the simple one. Eat like a human and not an American and watch your body change.
